Hyderabad/Bangalore/ Chandigarh, Sept.30 : The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) strongly condemned the stoppage of the transmission of the Kannada news channel ‘Power TV’ by the Bangalore police since Monday for airing an investigative story on the alleged corruption of the son and other relatives of the Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa. The Central Crime Bureau (CCB) personnel of the Bangalore police raided the office of the Power TV, a satellite television channel on Monday, and ransacked the office, and took away the servers, leading to stoppage of broadcasts.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, K Sreenivas Reddy President and Balwinder Singh Jammu Secretary General of the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) said the police raids on the office and studio of the Power TV and stoppage of its transmission was a direct attack on the freedom of the press and
freedom of expression, a fundamental right enshrined in the constitution. They demanded that the Bangalore police should restore the servers of the channel immediately to enable the restart of the broadcasts.
The IJU extended its support to the Power TV and its editors and the journalists working that the union would stand by them in the hour of crisis and render all possible help to fight against the high-handed action of the police. (NSS)
